Australia vs Canada: Which Is Better for Pakistani Students in 2026?

Both Australia and Canada are popular study destinations for Pakistani students. But they differ significantly on visa process, tuition fees, work rights, and post-study pathways. Here’s how they compare.

Visa Process

Australia uses a streamlined online process for the Subclass 500 student visa. Decisions for Pakistani applicants typically take 4–8 weeks. Canada’s Study Permit has a longer processing time (8–16 weeks) and requires biometrics. Both require proof of funds and admission from an approved institution.

Tuition Fees

Australian tuition fees average AUD 25,000–40,000 per year. Canadian fees range from CAD 20,000–35,000. At current exchange rates, both are comparable in PKR terms. Both countries require proof of living costs, AUD 21,041/year for Australia and CAD 10,000/year for Canada.

Work Rights During Studies

Australia allows 48 hours per fortnight during semester. Canada allows 20 hours per week during semester and full-time during scheduled breaks. Canada is slightly more generous for working students.

Post-Study Work

Australia offers 2–6 years of post-study work rights (Temporary Graduate visa subclass 485), with longer durations for regional study. Canada offers the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) for up to 3 years, which is a direct pathway to Permanent Residency.

PR Pathway

Canada has a significantly clearer PR pathway via Express Entry, directly linked to PGWP work experience. Australia has state-sponsored pathways that are more complex. For students planning to settle permanently, Canada currently has the stronger PR route.

Our Recommendation

If career outcomes and quality of student experience are the priority, both are excellent. If permanent residency is a goal, Canada has the more structured pathway. If you want longer post-study work rights without committing to PR, Australia offers more flexibility. We assess your specific situation in your first consultation.
