The standard English test for US and Canadian universities, Qatar Education City, and institutions worldwide that follow the American academic tradition. Home Edition available in Pakistan.
TOEFL iBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language, Internet-Based Test) is developed by ETS (Educational Testing Service) and is the English proficiency test most widely accepted by universities in the United States and Canada. It is the preferred test for Ivy League institutions, top Canadian universities, and many European universities that follow the American academic tradition. TOEFL iBT tests academic English specifically, reading excerpts from university-level textbooks, listening to lectures and discussions, speaking in response to academic prompts, and writing academic essays.
For Pakistani students applying to US universities, including those at Education City Qatar (Georgetown, CMU, Texas A&M, Northwestern), TOEFL iBT is the standard test. It is also widely accepted in the UK, though IELTS remains the primary test for UK visa purposes.
TOEFL iBT is not accepted by the UK Home Office (UKVI) for student visa applications. If you are applying to a UK university, you still need IELTS Academic, PTE Academic, or Oxford ELLT, even if the university accepts TOEFL for admission. Similarly, TOEFL is not accepted by Australian DHA for student visa applications. Use TOEFL if applying to US, Canadian, or Qatari institutions. For UK and Australia, use IELTS or PTE.
The TOEFL iBT Home Edition allows Pakistani students to take the test at home, monitored by ProctorU. The format, scoring, and validity are identical to the test centre version. It requires a quiet room, a stable internet connection, and a webcam. Results are delivered in the same 4–8 day window. For students in cities without an ETS test centre, the Home Edition removes the need to travel.
