Affordable and fast, now accepted for UK student visas, and a strong option for US and EU universities. Understanding exactly when DET is and is not the right choice for Pakistani students.
The Duolingo English Test (DET) is an online English proficiency test that can be taken at home, on any personal computer, at any time. It is significantly cheaper than IELTS (approximately PKR 14,000–16,000) and delivers results within 48 hours. The test is accepted by over 5,000 universities worldwide, including institutions in the United States, Canada, Germany, and several others. It is a legitimate testing option for students who have genuine English proficiency and want a fast, affordable result for institutions that accept it.
As of 2023, the UK Home Office approved the Duolingo English Test for student visa (UKVI) applications. Pakistani students applying to UK universities can now use DET as their proof of English proficiency, subject to the university also accepting it. Always confirm with your chosen institution before applying. Australia (DHA) and Ireland still do not accept DET for visa purposes.
DET is appropriate for Pakistani students who: (1) are applying specifically to US or Canadian universities that accept DET; (2) have genuine IELTS-equivalent English proficiency and want a fast, cheap result; (3) are not applying to the UK or Australia; (4) have already confirmed that their specific programme accepts DET at the admission stage. DET is not appropriate for students who need a UKVI or DHA-approved test for their visa, or who are using it to avoid demonstrating actual English proficiency, the consequences of insufficient language skills at a foreign university are severe.
