Which test to sit, what it costs in Lahore, what band your shortlist actually requires, and when to book so the score does not hold up your intake.

Choose the test after the shortlist, not before it

The most expensive mistake a Lahore student makes with English testing is sitting the wrong test first. Institutions do not accept the five tests interchangeably, and the same test can be accepted in one variant and refused in another. Oxford ELLT has three versions and only two are UKVI-approved. LanguageCert splits into an online ESOL and a centre-based SELT. Duolingo is accepted by some institutions and refused outright by others.

Establish the shortlist, confirm what each institution on it accepts, then book. Doing it in that order routinely saves a repeat test fee of PKR 70,000 or more.

Questions we are asked most

How much does IELTS cost in Lahore in 2026?
Computer-delivered IELTS Academic runs roughly PKR 71,300 to 76,420. Lahore sittings usually price a few hundred rupees above Karachi and Islamabad. Paying by card typically adds 3 to 5 per cent plus advance tax, so 1Bill or IBFT is the cheaper route.
Is paper-based IELTS still available in Pakistan?
No. Paper-based IELTS was discontinued nationwide on 9 March 2026. All Academic sittings in Lahore are now computer-delivered, which also means results arrive in three to five days rather than thirteen.
Who runs IELTS test centres in Lahore?
The British Council and IDP both operate Academic sittings in Lahore, with multiple dates each month. Both are accepted equally by universities and by UKVI where the UKVI-approved version is booked. Availability, not the provider, should decide your booking.
What band score do I actually need?
IELTS 6.5 overall with no band below 5.5 is the working benchmark across the destinations we handle. Some undergraduate routes accept 6.0, and technological universities in Ireland and several Australian pathway colleges sit lower still. Postgraduate entry at selective institutions commonly requires 6.5 with no band under 6.0.
Can I skip IELTS altogether?
Sometimes. A Medium of Instruction letter is accepted by a limited set of institutions, and Oxford ELLT, LanguageCert, PTE and Duolingo are each accepted by different institutions in different variants. Which alternative works depends entirely on the university and the visa route, so the test decision should follow the shortlist, not precede it.
When should I sit the test for a January 2027 intake?
Clear the test by mid-September 2026 at the latest. That leaves room for one re-sit before applications, attestation and the visa file, all of which sit downstream of the score.
