Turkey has over 200 universities. The Türkiye Burslari scholarship covers only a fraction of available places. Tens of thousands of international students, including Pakistanis, study in Turkey on self-funding every year. Here is whether it makes sense financially and academically.
Tuition Fees Without Scholarship
State (public) Turkish universities charge international students approximately $300 to $800 per semester in tuition, some of the lowest tuition fees in the world for internationally recognised degrees. Private Turkish universities charge $3,000 to $10,000 per year, with some prestigious institutions charging more. Medicine is the significant exception: private Turkish medical degrees cost $15,000 to $25,000 per year, though state university medicine can be as low as $500 per year if you can secure admission through the YÖS exam.
Cost of Living
Turkey's cost of living has shifted significantly due to currency fluctuation in recent years. For Pakistani students, paying fees in USD while the Turkish Lira continues to fluctuate creates both opportunity and uncertainty. Monthly living costs in Ankara or Konya are approximately $250 to $400. Istanbul is more expensive at $400 to $600 per month. These are extraordinary by Western standards, comparable to Malaysia and significantly cheaper than any European country.
State University Admission
Admission to Turkish state universities for international students goes through the YÖS (Yabancı Öğrenci Sınavı) examination or directly through the institution. The YÖS tests mathematical reasoning and basic sciences, it is not an English language test. Some universities accept IELTS, SAT, or GCE A-Level results as alternatives to YÖS. Acceptance rates at state universities for international students are higher than for Turkish domestic students due to reserved quotas.
Language of Instruction
The majority of Turkish state university programmes are taught in Turkish. English-medium programmes exist at Istanbul Technical University, Middle East Technical University (METU), Boğaziçi University, and several private universities. METU is particularly popular with English-speaking Pakistani students, it teaches all programmes in English and is Turkey's most internationally recognised public university.
Is a Turkish Degree Worth It?
Turkish degrees are recognised in Pakistan, in the Gulf, and in European countries for further study. A state university degree from METU or Istanbul Technical University carries genuine weight in engineering and technical fields. The honest answer for Pakistani students is: Turkey without a scholarship is excellent value if your career targets Pakistan or the Gulf; it requires additional postgraduate study from a Western institution if your target is direct Western employment.
