The United Kingdom remains the most popular study destination for Pakistani students. In 2024, over 15,000 Pakistanis received UK student visas. Here is everything you need to know to be among them in 2026.
Why the UK?
UK degrees are globally recognised, typically one year shorter than equivalent Pakistani degrees, and the Graduate Route visa allows you to work in the UK for two years after graduation (three years for PhD graduates). For Pakistani students, this combination of academic prestige and post-study opportunity is unmatched.
Top Universities for Pakistani Applicants
Russell Group universities, which include Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, UCL, Manchester, and Edinburgh, are the most competitive. However, excellent value is also found at universities like Coventry, Northumbria, and De Montfort, which have strong Pakistani student communities and solid graduate employment rates. Your choice should depend on your field, CGPA, and budget, not just rankings.
IELTS Requirements
Most UK universities require IELTS Academic with an overall band of 6.0 to 6.5 for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Some competitive programmes at Russell Group universities require 7.0. PTE Academic is widely accepted as an alternative. Do not confuse IELTS Academic with IELTS General Training, universities require the Academic version.
Tuition Fees
For Pakistani students studying in 2026, undergraduate tuition fees at UK universities typically range from £11,000 to £26,000 per year depending on the institution and subject. Postgraduate programmes typically range from £13,000 to £30,000. Medical and dental programmes are significantly more expensive. London is the most expensive city for living costs.
Living Costs
The UK Home Office requires Pakistani students to demonstrate funds of £1,334 per month for studying in London, or £1,023 per month outside London, for the duration of your course. This covers accommodation, food, transport, and personal expenses. In practice, many students live on less through shared housing and part-time work.
The Student Visa
You need a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from your university before applying. The visa application is made online and requires biometric data. Processing typically takes three to four weeks. You can apply up to six months before your course start date. The credibility interview is conducted by the UK UKVI at some Pakistani High Commission appointments.
Part-Time Work Rights
UK student visa holders can work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during official vacations. The UK minimum wage from April 2025 is £12.21 per hour for those aged 21 and over. Many Pakistani students in the UK work part-time in retail, hospitality, or their field of study through internships.
What Pakistani Students Often Overlook
The Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) must be paid before submitting your visa application. At the 2026 rate of £776 per year, a three-year undergraduate degree costs over £2,300 in IHS alone. This must be factored into your budget well in advance.
