Qatar has invested billions in building one of the world's most ambitious education projects, Education City, which hosts branch campuses of leading American, British, and French universities. For Pakistani students, it presents a unique opportunity.
What is Education City?
Education City is a 2,500-acre campus in Doha that hosts branch campuses of Georgetown University, Northwestern University, Carnegie Mellon University, Texas A&M University, Virginia Commonwealth University (arts and design), Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar, HEC Paris Qatar, and the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies. Degrees from these institutions are identical to those awarded on the home campuses and are globally recognised.
Scholarships Available
The Qatar Foundation subsidises tuition significantly at Education City. Merit scholarships covering 50% to 100% of tuition are available at most Education City universities. Financial aid packages based on demonstrated need are also offered. Pakistani students have successfully received full scholarships at Georgetown, CMU, and Texas A&M Qatar. The scholarships are competitive but the application process is the same as applying directly to these universities.
Tuition Without Scholarship
Full tuition without scholarship ranges from USD 15,000 to USD 55,000 per year depending on the institution. CMU-Q and Georgetown-Q are among the more expensive. Living costs in Doha are moderate by Gulf standards, shared accommodation costs QAR 2,000 to QAR 4,000 per month, and food is affordable given the large Pakistani and South Asian community in Doha.
Pakistani Community in Qatar
Qatar hosts one of the largest Pakistani expatriate communities in the world, approximately 200,000 Pakistanis live and work in Qatar. This means halal food is universally available, Urdu is spoken widely in daily life, and students have family or community connections who ease the transition. Many Pakistani students report that Qatar feels the least like studying abroad in terms of cultural adjustment.
Application Process
Applications to Education City universities go through the same portals as the home institutions, Common App for American universities, direct portals for others. Qatar student residency permits are arranged by the university. Unlike UAE, there is no separate student visa application, your residency permit is your legal status in Qatar.
