Study in Hungary from Pakistan: Stipendium Hungaricum and Self-Funded Guide 2026

Hungary quietly offers one of the strongest value propositions in European higher education for Pakistani students. Public-university tuition starts at €2,000 per year. Over 600 degree programmes are taught entirely in English. The Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship, a Hungarian government programme, fully funds hundreds of Pakistani students each year. And every degree is recognised across the entire European Union. For students who want EU-quality qualifications without UK-level fees, Hungary is often the most rational answer.

The Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship in detail

Stipendium Hungaricum is one of the world's largest government-funded scholarships for international students, and Pakistan is one of its top three beneficiary countries. The scholarship covers tuition (100%), provides a monthly stipend of approximately HUF 43,700 for Bachelor's and Master's students (around PKR 35,000 at current rates), a larger stipend for PhD candidates, dormitory accommodation or a housing allowance, and comprehensive medical insurance. Pakistan receives approximately 200 places each year, distributed across nearly every Hungarian university and field of study.

Self-funded route: why Hungary still makes sense

Even without the scholarship, Hungary is structurally cheaper than almost every Western European destination. Tuition at public universities (ELTE, Szeged, Debrecen, Pécs) typically ranges from €2,500 to €6,000 per year for non-medical programmes. Private institutions and medical programmes are higher. Combined with living costs of approximately €7,000–9,600 per year, a Master's degree in Hungary can be completed for €15,000–20,000 total, a fraction of equivalent UK or Australian budgets.

English-taught programmes and what to study

Hungary offers over 600 full degree programmes delivered in English. Strong fields include medicine (Semmelweis, Szeged, Debrecen, and Pécs all run internationally-recognised English-medium MD programmes), engineering (BME is Hungary's MIT-equivalent), economics and business (Corvinus), international relations and political science (ELTE, Corvinus), and IT and computer science. Medical degrees are particularly popular with Pakistani students who find them far more affordable than equivalents in the UK or US.

Entry requirements and application timeline

For most Bachelor's programmes, you need HSSC (FSC/A-Levels) with 65–70% and IELTS 5.5–6.0. For Master's, a Bachelor's with a minimum 2.5 CGPA and IELTS 6.0 is typical. Medical programmes require additional entrance examinations in biology and chemistry. The Stipendium Hungaricum application window is usually November to January, with results announced in April–May for the September intake. Self-funded direct applications have rolling deadlines, typically 2–4 months before semester start.

Visa process and residence permits

Hungary issues a single-entry national visa (Type D) for first entry, converted to a residence permit within 30 days of arrival. The visa fee is €110 and the residence permit card costs €18. You apply at the Hungarian Embassy in Islamabad with acceptance letter, proof of tuition payment or scholarship award, €6,000 in available funds for the first year, and compulsory health insurance. Processing takes 30–60 days from submission.

Student life: Budapest, Debrecen, Szeged compared

Budapest is the most cosmopolitan, with the largest Pakistani community, best public transport, and most career opportunities, but with higher rents (€400–550/month for a room). Debrecen has Hungary's largest international student population and strong medical and engineering programmes, with much lower living costs (€300–400/month). Szeged is a smaller, walkable student city with strong science faculties and the cheapest living costs of the major university cities.

The route from Hungarian graduate to EU professional

Graduates can apply for a 9-month job-search residence permit to find employment in Hungary. Upon securing a qualifying role (typically above the median Hungarian salary), you receive a work residence permit. Highly skilled graduates can then apply for the EU Blue Card, which is portable across most EU member states after 18 months. This makes Hungary a rational entry point for Pakistani students targeting longer-term EU careers, not just study.
