PTE Academic is accepted by thousands of universities in the UK, Australia, USA, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, and Europe. Its computer-scored format eliminates examiner bias and its results are available within 48 hours. For many Pakistani students, it is a better choice than IELTS, but only if you understand how it works.
What is PTE Academic?
PTE (Pearson Test of English) Academic is a computer-based English language test that measures Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening in an integrated format across 20 different question types. Unlike IELTS, you speak into a microphone in a testing centre rather than to a human examiner. Results are available within 48 hours and scores are sent directly to universities electronically. Tests are available multiple times per week at Pearson centres in Lahore, Karachi, and Islamabad.
PTE vs IELTS: Which is Better for Pakistanis?
There is no universally correct answer, but there are clear patterns. Pakistani students who struggle with speaking anxiety often perform better in PTE because the absence of a human examiner reduces nerves. Students who are strong readers and writers but average speakers often score higher in PTE because the integrated format allows strong performance in one area to partially compensate for weaker performance elsewhere. IELTS, conversely, scores each skill independently with no compensation between sections.
PTE Scoring
PTE Academic scores range from 10 to 90. A score of 58 roughly corresponds to IELTS 6.5, while 65 corresponds to approximately IELTS 7.0. Most UK universities accept PTE 58 to 65. Australian visa requirements typically require PTE 50 overall with no communicative skill below 36. The score conversion is approximate and universities specify their own PTE requirements alongside IELTS equivalents.
The 20 Question Types
PTE's 20 question types include Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image, Re-tell Lecture, Answer Short Question (Speaking); Summarise Written Text, Essay (Writing); Multiple Choice, Re-order Paragraphs, Fill in the Blanks (Reading); and Summarise Spoken Text, Multiple Choice, Highlight Correct Summary, Fill in the Blanks, Highlight Incorrect Words, Write from Dictation (Listening). The sheer variety means test-day strategy, knowing which question types carry the most marks, significantly affects performance.
Preparation Strategy
Unlike IELTS, PTE rewards very specific techniques, particularly for Repeat Sentence (which carries enormous weight in both Speaking and Listening scores), Write from Dictation (which can dramatically improve Listening scores), and Read Aloud (which affects both Speaking and Reading). Six to eight weeks of focused PTE-specific preparation, using official Pearson practice materials and a structured question-type approach, is typically sufficient to achieve PTE 65.
