My Honest Review of Studying in Malaysia as a Pakistani Student

My Honest Review of Studying in Malaysia as a Pakistani Student

This account is shared by a Gohata Global student who completed a Bachelor's in Business Administration at Taylor's University in Subang Jaya, Malaysia in 2023. She asked us to include both what she loved and what she found genuinely difficult.

What I Expected vs What I Found

I expected Malaysia to feel like a cheaper, less prestigious version of the UK. I was completely wrong. Malaysia is not a consolation prize. It is a genuinely fascinating, multicultural country with a quality of life that, on a student budget, is far more comfortable than anything I could have managed in the UK. The cost of living is low enough that I was not constantly anxious about money, which freed up mental space for actually studying.

The Good: Food, People, Infrastructure

Kuala Lumpur is one of the best cities in the world for food. Everything is halal. There are Pakistani restaurants, Indian restaurants, Malay food stalls, Chinese dim sum, Japanese ramen, all within walking distance of the campus, all affordable. The public transport (LRT and MRT) is excellent. The people, Malay, Chinese, Indian, and international, are genuinely welcoming. The Pakistani student community in KL is large enough to be a community and small enough to be a community.

The Academic Reality

This is where I will be honest. The academic quality at Taylor's was good but not world-class. The lecturers are qualified and engaged, but the classroom culture, like Pakistan, is somewhat passive. Students do not challenge, debate, or push back in the way UK university students do. If you are going to Malaysia specifically to grow academically, you need to seek that growth yourself, through research projects, internships, and independent reading that goes beyond the syllabus.

The Degree Question

Malaysian degrees from reputable institutions are recognised in Pakistan and in the Gulf, which is where most Malaysian graduates from Pakistan end up. For the UK, US, or Australian job markets, a Malaysian degree from a non-top institution will require additional explanation and probably a Master's from a more recognised institution. I knew this going in, and I planned my MBA accordingly, I am currently applying to universities in Europe for postgraduate study.

What I Would Tell Someone Considering Malaysia

Go to Malaysia if you want a genuinely comfortable, affordable, multicultural student experience where you can complete a recognised degree without financial stress. Do not go to Malaysia as a substitute for the UK or Australia if your career goals require UK-level recognition. Malaysia is excellent at what it is. Be clear about what you need before you choose it.
