How Much Does It Actually Cost to Study in Malaysia from Pakistan?

Malaysia is the most affordable English-medium study destination for Pakistani students outside of Pakistan itself. But what does it actually cost? Here is the honest breakdown.

Why Pakistani Students Choose Malaysia

Malaysia offers UK-affiliated and Australian-affiliated degrees at one-third of the Western cost, a Muslim-majority environment, halal food everywhere, a large Pakistani community, a warm climate, and one of the most straightforward student visa processes in Asia. It is an increasingly popular first choice, not a fallback option.

Tuition Fees

Tuition varies significantly by institution and programme. At universities like HELP University, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, and Taylor's University, annual fees for international students range from RM 12,000 to RM 45,000 (approximately PKR 800,000 to PKR 3,000,000 at current rates). Twinning programmes, where you spend 1 to 2 years in Malaysia and transfer to a UK or Australian university, cost significantly more in Malaysia but total less than studying entirely abroad.

Accommodation

On-campus accommodation at Malaysian universities typically costs RM 400 to RM 900 per month. Off-campus shared accommodation in Kuala Lumpur ranges from RM 600 to RM 1,200 per month. Outside the capital, in cities like Ipoh, Penang, and Kota Bharu, accommodation is considerably cheaper. Most Pakistani students spend around RM 700 to RM 900 per month on a private room in a shared flat.

Food and Daily Living

This is where Malaysia genuinely surprises Pakistani students. Halal food is everywhere and extremely affordable. A full meal at a mamak restaurant costs RM 8 to RM 15. Cooking at home with groceries from a wet market costs even less. Most Pakistani students in Malaysia spend RM 500 to RM 800 per month on food, far less than in any Western country.

Monthly Budget Estimate

A realistic monthly budget for a Pakistani student in Malaysia: Accommodation RM 800, Food RM 700, Transport RM 150, Personal expenses RM 200, Total approximately RM 1,850 per month. Annual living costs therefore run to approximately RM 22,000, around PKR 1,450,000 at current exchange rates.

Student Pass and Visa

The Malaysian Student Pass is processed through your university via the Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS) portal. Processing takes 4 to 6 weeks and costs approximately RM 1,200 to RM 1,500 in fees. Multiple-entry is standard, allowing you to return to Pakistan during semester breaks.

Part-Time Work

Malaysian law allows international students to work up to 20 hours per week in specific sectors. However, enforcement varies and campus jobs are limited. Unlike in the UK or Australia, part-time work in Malaysia should not be part of your financial plan.
