IELTS vs PTE vs TOEFL: Which English Test is Best for Pakistani Students?

Pakistani students are required to take an English proficiency test for almost every international university and country-specific visa. The choice between IELTS, PTE Academic, and TOEFL is genuinely consequential, the right choice can save months of preparation time.

IELTS Academic: The Gold Standard

IELTS Academic is accepted by virtually every university in the world that requires English proficiency proof, UK, Australia, Canada, Europe, UAE, Malaysia, and most US universities. Tested in over 140 countries and available multiple times per month at IDP and British Council centres in Lahore, Karachi, and Islamabad, IELTS is the most universally recognised option. The Speaking component is face-to-face with a trained examiner. Results are available within 2 to 5 days of testing for computer-based IELTS, or 13 days for paper-based. The cost is approximately PKR 38,000.

PTE Academic: The Computer-Based Alternative

PTE Academic is accepted by Australian universities (including all Go8), UK universities, and over 3,000 institutions worldwide. It is not accepted for Canadian student visas or US visa purposes. Results arrive within 48 hours. The computer-scored format eliminates examiner variability. PTE is generally considered easier to achieve specific score thresholds quickly because of this predictability, if you know the test format and techniques, your score will reflect your preparation more directly than IELTS. Cost is approximately PKR 35,000.

TOEFL iBT: For US-Focused Applicants

TOEFL iBT is required by virtually all US universities and is accepted by Canadian institutions, UK universities, and European institutions. It is not accepted for UK or Australian visa purposes. The test is entirely computer-based and tests academic English in an integrated format where skills overlap between sections. Pakistani students targeting US universities should prioritise TOEFL. Cost is approximately USD 245 (around PKR 68,000), making it the most expensive option.

Score Equivalency

Approximate equivalencies: IELTS 6.0 ≈ PTE 50 ≈ TOEFL 72. IELTS 6.5 ≈ PTE 58 ≈ TOEFL 87. IELTS 7.0 ≈ PTE 65 ≈ TOEFL 100. These conversions are approximate and institutions specify their own requirements for each test separately. Do not assume a PTE 58 will be accepted where IELTS 6.5 is stated, verify the university's specific PTE requirement independently.

How to Choose

IELTS is the correct choice if: you are applying to UK universities (for visa purposes, UKVI requires IELTS SELT or approved alternatives), you are applying to institutions across multiple countries, or you are uncertain about your destination. PTE is the correct choice if: you are targeting Australia specifically, you have speaking anxiety, you want faster results, or you have done a diagnostic test and performed better in PTE format. TOEFL is the correct choice if: you are applying to US universities or US-accredited programmes.
