Australia Student Visa Guide for Pakistani Students 2026

Australia is the second most popular English-speaking study destination for Pakistani students after the UK. Over 8,000 Pakistani students held Australian student visas in 2024. Here is how to join them.

The Student Visa Subclass 500

Australia's student visa is called the Subclass 500. It allows you to study full-time in Australia and work up to 48 hours per fortnight during term time (the restriction was temporarily lifted post-COVID and may remain eased). You apply for this visa after receiving your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) from your Australian institution.

The GTE Requirement

The Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement is what trips up most Pakistani applicants. You must demonstrate that you intend to stay in Australia temporarily for study and then return to Pakistan. The Department of Home Affairs assesses your ties to Pakistan, family, property, career prospects, and whether your course choice is genuinely aligned with your background and career goals. A weak GTE statement is the leading cause of Australian student visa refusals for Pakistanis.

Financial Requirements

You must prove funds of approximately AUD 24,505 per year for living costs (2026 figure), plus full tuition fees for at least the first year. Unlike Germany, Australia does not require a blocked account. Bank statements showing consistent funds over the past 6 months, combined with sponsor documents, are the standard approach. Assets and property documents from Pakistan strengthen the application considerably.

English Language Requirements

Most Australian universities require IELTS Academic 6.0 to 6.5 overall, with no band below 5.5 or 6.0 depending on the institution. PTE Academic 50 to 58 is the most common alternative. Some institutions offer pathway programmes for students who do not meet the direct entry requirements.

Top Universities for Pakistani Students

The Group of Eight (Go8) universities, including Melbourne, Sydney, UNSW, ANU, Monash, and Queensland, are the most prestigious. However, universities like RMIT, Deakin, Griffith, and Western Sydney offer strong programmes with more accessible entry requirements and significant Pakistani student communities. Melbourne and Sydney are the most popular cities among Pakistani students.

Post-Study Work Rights

The Temporary Graduate visa (Subclass 485) allows you to stay in Australia after graduation. Duration depends on your level of study and location, it ranges from 2 years for a Bachelor's degree in a major city to 6 years for a qualification studied in a regional area. Australia's post-study work rights have historically been more generous than the UK for certain fields.

Why Pakistani Applications Get Refused

The three most common reasons for Australian student visa refusals for Pakistanis are: a weak GTE statement that does not convincingly explain why Australia and why this course; financial documents that show unexplained large deposits in the months before application; and a course choice that does not logically connect to the applicant's previous education or stated career goals.
